
So from that perspective I can understand the rationale that led to 2016 coming to pass, even though not setting it in the same universe was an odd choice, especially since they pulled in every cast member anyways - Bill Murray included. I think it was a smart enough idea to shift it to an all female cast so people aren't directly correlating it to the original, and then at that point making it just Bridesmaids with proton packs seems like the logical next step.

The Ghostbusters franchise took as long of a hiatus as it did because they tried desperately to get 3 going for decades, with complications (mainly: Bill Murray) halting it, and when Harold Ramis passed I think that was enough for them to put plans of the proper Ghostbusters 3 to rest and try something new.
